Autumn Garden- Mulching, Trellis Construction & Weeding

Beautiful weather in Melbourne town today!

Haven't been out in the garden for about two weeks. First, the whole family was sick for a week & then we had several days of rainy, drab weather. Well today was a fine day, so out we all went, gardening mumma, little helper & baby girl.

Baby girl watched all the gardening unfold from her snuggly position in her baby carrier.

She obviously thought it was fun. She's very easy to please to be honest! Like her mother of course.

On the way down to the veggie patch, I passed my Sango Kaku maple & took a few photos. It is looking gorgeous in the autumn sun.

First look at the garden & stupid possums and/or Siamese cat have eaten some of my pea seedlings & most of my spinach. There is possum poo everywhere, so I'm assuming it's the night bandits again *sigh* well at least there are still some left *sigh again*. Here's a couple of photos of my spinach at the moment.

Today I made a trellis for my sugar snap pea seedlings. I attached plastic covered wire to the 2 stakes I placed when I sowed the pea seeds a few weeks ago. I also lightly tied some of the seedlings to the lower wire to encourage them to trail up into the trellis.

I also lightly tied my pea seedlings to my other trellis. They were planted as seedlings so they are more advanced than my sugar snap peas. Some photos.

They should be up & climbing in no time.

Checked out my garlic next. It's looking lovely.

My parsley is as lush as ever. Been adding it to many dishes.

And little helpers nasturtium is growing beautifully as well.

Not sure about my silver beet. It seems very small for how long it's been in the ground. Not holding much hope for it, but, we'll see.

My spring onion is a bit odd? As I said when I planted it initially, I've never grown it before, so I'm not too sure how it grows. At the moment it is a bunch of very, very thin shoots. Perhaps they will grow into full sized spring onions?? I hope so!

Could you see them? Like I said, very, very thin.

Did a bit of weeding. Clover is running wild in my patch at the moment & lots of little grass shoots all around. Tried to pull them out before they become a big problem.

Yoink, yoink!

A lot of mulch has washed away & started to decompose (which is great for the soil) so little helper & I added some more all around the garden.

Please note: I do put shoes on my child when he goes outside. He decided he didn't want them on & if you have a toddler, you know you just let these types of things go! Pick your battles they say.

Baby girl was having a great time riding on my back, watching little shoe-less helper & I garden.

After mulching, I added some more snail & slug pellets. After all the rain we've had there has been lots of them around.

I like this brand because it's safe for the Siamese cat & those annoying possums that eat all my crops.

After all the rain recently, the last thing my patch needed was a watering, but little helper wanted to & who am I to deny his cranky "watering now?" face.

So water the garden he did.

Here is my Autumn/Winter patch end of April 2012. Things are pretty tame but hoping it will all take off soon.

Oh by the way, please excuse the poorly placed soaker hose. I really need to lay it better. I'll wait until everything gets a bit bigger & work around the plants.

Hope you enjoyed todays veggie patch update.

Have a fantastic Sunday,

Bel

Early Autumn on the Balcony

Autumn is proving very exciting! Most things are starting to look haggard & spent, like my standard & creeping rose. My standard fuchsia is finished flowering now & is no longer a bright, bushy green ball filled with pretty pink flowers. Yep, things are looking drab......but not my maples

It's their time to shine! They are getting fiery already. My Sango Kaku is a mix of amber, gold, olive & orange leaves attached to bright red stems & trunks. It's going to be beautiful once it's all golden & red.

My Inaba Shidare is really special. As I mentioned in a previous post, it's my first autumn with this tree so I've only read that the leaves turn crimson. I never dreamed they'd be as red as they are! They are almost Flourescent red. Will take lots of pictures of it once the leaves have all turned.

I've noticed my precious maple has been looking a bit off lately & I only noticed today it's covered in tiny bugs!!! I decided I'd try the old soapy water trick (dish washing liquid & water sprayed on the bugs will kill them- not all bugs though) & I'm hoping, hoping, hoping they leave my tree alone. My poor maple.

And finally, what I suspect is my very last Dahlia until Spring

Until next time readers,

Bel

Autumn/Winter Garden: Spinach

A very overcast & cold day today, but no rain, so out into the garden I went. Today I planted spinach. I went down all by myself, which was nice & peaceful. Little helper came with me to buy the spinach seedlings but didn't want to garden & sometimes, that's nice too.

Firstly, I watered everything & dug up some soil to mound up for the spinach. I tried my hand at tench composting a few months ago & I tried to collect that beautiful soil for my spinach. I sadly stopped trench composting soon after I started it as I couldn't stand collecting all the scraps. After about a week the scraps were awful & the bucket they were in was so, so awful & I just couldn't bare cleaning it out all the time, so I stopped. I will be buying a proper compost bin at some stage because I really want to compost & not send all that goodness to landfill.

Next, I started to separate the seedlings. While doing this it occurred to me that this spinach plant was just one, more advanced spinach plant & I was trying to separate it!! Well, I ended up with one bunch & two sad looking smaller plants. Geez, I don't have much hope for these plants after I hacked away at them, but we'll see!

In they went, still looking sad.

Look at how gorgeous my sugar snap pea's are! So happy with them.

Now that they have grown to a decent height, it's mulch time. I mulched them with pea straw.

I opened the packet up side down. Hehe

Mulched around the sad spinach as well.

Spinach & sugar snap peas, all mulched well with pea mulch.

My garlic is looking great! Can't believe how fast it's sprung up.

Mulched the garlic as well.

My parsley, grown from my Nonna's seeds is growing so beautifully. I have added it to many meals over the months.

And little helpers little flower has sprouted this week as well. He'll be very happy to see this next time we are in the garden together.

Here is my veggie patch today. Snow peas, parsley, garlic, spring onions, silver beet, nasturtium, spinach & sugar snap peas. Getting full now.

Thanks for reading,
